Theory of cell quality scalar

Hi ! Does anyone know how work cell quality scalar in Star CCM+ ? I mean cell quality scalar is based on what ? Only the length or there is something more for Star CCM+ to qualify a cell as bad ?

I believe that their algorithm is proprietary, otherwise the details would be listed in the help files. I think they updated this algorithm in the 2020 version, so the answer may even depend on your version (somewhat).

Their description of the algorithm says that it is based on a hybrid of the Gauss and least-squares methods for cell gradient calculations and considers the distribution of the centroids as well as the orientation of neighboring cells.

I imagine that none of that is very helpful. If you really need an answer to this, you may need to submit a help ticket and hope that they can give you enough details to make sense of it.
