Default Import from CAD

Hello,

I was used to work with closed surfaces with various names as input for CFD but now with STAR-CCM+ I see that the best way is to import solid volumes and having to split surfaces by patch in STAR-CCM+ is a bit slow and painful.

I tried to import surfaces but then I had mesh problems as the surface was not fully colsed, Not sure If I have to use the surface wrapper for that or I different tesselation mode (in CAD or STAR-CCM+).

Any tips?

Just to be a bit more clear with that I would like:
I would like to define in CAD all relevant boundaries (inlet/oulet, special faces, etc etc) and have a clean import from CAD with the relevant surfaces already split in some way. Any idea of how to achieve that (if possible)

Thanks

Yep, Star requires input parts for meshing and solving to be solid (not "shell" surfaces).
Well, except for 3D shell approach for heat transfer in thin solids.

Might be an option, but wrapper is usually used for dirty or complicated geometry.

Won't help in this case.

Depends on the CAD software you use.

Yeah, that's what I remembered... I was seeing it was make a clean geometry way more dirty

I am using 3DX (which is what the call the latest CATIA software)

In rhino, one can name the surfaces (boundaries) and export the geometry without joining everything into a single body. The trick, I believe, is to export the geometry in stp format.
If one then imports the stp in StarCCM+, the surfaces retain their name (and are separate surfaces).

Perhaps you could try the stp format and see what happens?
