difference in the trimming and mapping method

hi,
im working in the es-ice and i need to now the difference b/w the trimming and mapping method used in the es-ice.

Been a while since I did any serious es-ice. Here is what I remember.

The trimmer cuts (i.e. trims) a mesh with your surfaces. Typically the method creates polyhedral cells at the trimmed locations. Trimming requires a water tight starting surface.

Mapping takes a pre-defined mesh topology (i.e. the template) & morphs it to fit your surfaces. You define (i.e. map) related surface pairs between your surfaces & the matching template surface. Mapping does not require a water tight starting surface.
