Default Extraction deletes data set

Hi
I am facing a strange issue for a simple process.
I import native Fluent files into Tecplot.

I create slices to extract surface information.
However, after I use the extract data option, my fluent data files are removed from the data set. The layout is not linked to any files anymore.

Why is this happening? How do I correct this? It is not an isolated error and occurs on different files.

When the file names disappear from the Data Set Information dialog - Tecplot 360 is not actually deleting the dataset, as your data is still loaded. This indicates that the action you took (Slice Extraction) makes it so Tecplot 360 cannot save a layout which is linked to the original data files.

There are certain actions that are like this and you'll have to save either a Tecplot LPK file or write the data to a new PLT file, then save the layout.

I hope this answers the question.

Thanks,
Scott

You may be able to avoid this issue if you extract one slice group at a time (avoid the "All active slice groups" setting in the Extract Slice dialog). There could be other caveats, but try that and see if it works for you.

Thank you for your replies.

If it deletes the data set it is linked to, I cannot save a linked file anymore. Moreover, not all varialbes are loaded and I cannot save a packaged file either.

But this doesn't happen only when extracting multiple slices.
True, that it does not happen when I extract one slice at a time.
But, I create lines and then extract data points along those lines on slices. This operation also deletes the dataset.

You're right that this occurs with other actions in Tecplot 360. The most common being the extraction of new data.

You should still be able to save an LAY file, but Tecplot 360 will prompt you to save the data from each frame to a new data file - severing the connection from your original data files.

You should also be able to save an LPK file - but LPK files are limited to 4Gb.

I'd be happy to discuss these issues further with you directly. You can reach me through our support email: support@tecplot.com.
