Applications are invited for two PhD positions in the field of Computational Fluid
Dynamics, in the Department of
Ocean and Mechanical Engineering at the Florida Atlantic University (FAU). The positions
involve coupling high-
fidelity flow simulations with Numerical Optimization and Machine Learning techniques, to
investigate both
fundamental and applied problems in fluid mechanics. The focus of the two positions will
be on: 1) bioinspired
design for efficient propulsion of aerial and aquatic vehicles; and 2) fundamental flow
physics for turbulent flow
control. Apart from conducting in-depth analyses of flow physics, the students will gain
invaluable experience in
working with High Performance Computing (HPC), including developing code and
Numerical Methods targeted
specifically towards highly parallelized simulations. Some examples of the kind of work
that the students may be
involved with can be found at

In addition to computational work, the students will have the opportunity to conduct
experimental work in close
collaboration with researchers at Seatech (
centers/seatech.php) and at the Harbor
Branch Oceanographic Institute ( These campuses house state-
of-the-art marine
laboratory facilities, and conduct both fundamental and applied research in marine
science and engineering,
ocean dynamics and modeling, conservation of coral reefs, marine drug discovery, and
studies of marine
mammals and fisheries.

The two positions are targeted primarily towards doctoral students (PhD). However,
candidates interested in
pursuing a Master’s degree are also encouraged to apply. The ideal candidates will hold
Bachelor’s and/or
Master’s degrees in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Ocean Engineering, or a closely related

The tentative start date for both the positions is January 2019, however a different starting
date may be possible.
Interested candidates are requested to send their CV and a short description of their
research interests to Prof.
Siddhartha Verma at
