Fully-funded PhD Position: Computations and Experiments on Floating Offshore
Structures with Multiple Wind Turbines

We invite applications for a fully funded Ph.D. position in Marine Hydrodynamics
and Ocean Engineering at the University of Dundee, Scotland, UK.

The Ph.D. research project is concerned with experiments and computations on
motion and elastic response of floating offshore structures with multiple wind
turbines. Environmental loads on the structures include a combination of wind,
waves, and current loads and the restoring forces due to the mooring lines.  The
fluid-structure interaction problem will be studied by use of computational
fluid dynamics and by conducting laboratory experiments. We are looking for
students with strong interest in both computational and experimental methods.
The project will be carried out at the University of Dundee in Scotland, as well
as in close collaboration with partner international universities. 

Full funding is available for the four years of the PhD studentship. The funding
covers the full tuition fees and a standard stipend of approximately £15k per
year. The studentship will start ASAP, and no later than February 2019.

The successful candidate must have a M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) in Ocean
Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mathematics or related
disciplines with a strong background in Fluid Mechanics; knowledge of Marine
Hydrodynamics and Naval Architecture are desirable.  Previous experience in
using hydrodynamics and aerodynamics computational tools and software, and
experience with laboratory experiments as related to this project, are highly
preferred.

Candidates must demonstrate high academic potential to successfully complete the
Ph.D. project. Enthusiasm for research, an ability to think and work
independently, excellent analytical skills and strong verbal and written
communication skills are essential requirements.

The successful applicant will join the Marine Hydrodynamics Research Group at
the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Dundee. For the past 16
years, Civil Engineering research at Dundee has maintained its ranking as 1st in
Scotland and in the top 10 in the UK.  A major contributor to this success was
the nationally- and internationally-recognized research in Fluid Mechanics
focusing on ocean, coastal and offshore engineering applications,
fluid-structure interaction, and marine renewable energy. The University of
Dundee has been named in 2015 and 2016 the Scottish University of the Year in
The Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide.
