Title: Numerical simulation of a decanter used in the mining sector

Context: The company Technosub develops the MudWizard technology whose purpose 
is to purify ground water sludge. It consists mainly of a dissolver, an 
agitator, and a decanter. MudWizard is increasingly used in mining for its good pe
performance allowing better management of water in a particularly consumer se
sector. This research master's project aims at optimizing the performance of th
the decanter while minimizing its footprint (a particularly crucial point in th
the mines) and complexity of manufacturing.

Methodology: The student should develop a CFD solver based on the multiphase 
mixture model under ANSYS Fluent software. It should be able to simulate 
solid/liquid suspension flows in a complex but stationary geometry (decanter). 
The second objective will be to understand what are the key parameters 
(geometry, operating conditions) that influence its performance. To reduce the 
number of required simulations, a method based on sequential structured 
experiment’s plans will be used. The last step will be to propose an optimal d
design for the decanter. 
A strong interaction with Technosub is desired with several visits to the gold 
mine in Rouyn-Noranda. Measurements on an actual facility will get the first tr
trends for the parametric study and help validating the numerical solver. The re
recruited student will be assisted by an undergraduate intern and a research pr
professional. He (she) will have access to the computational resources av
available at LMFTEUS ( and to the HPC facilities of
of the Compute Canada network.

Required skills: Bachelor in mechanical engineering or in a related field. A 
good knowledge in fluid mechanics is required. Knowledge in numerical methods 
and a first experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics using one of the 
following softwares, ANSYS or OpenFOAM, would be appreciated. French native pe
persons are strongly encouraged to apply.

Institution: The workplace is the faculty of mechanical engineering at 
Université de Sherbrooke (Québec, Canada) with a strong collaboration with Technosub
Technosub in LaRonde Mines. Good salary (net funding of 17500$ per year) and w
working conditions are offered. The starting date for this position is winter 2
2019 but it could be postponed to the summer session depending on the a
