Pyroclastic flows are gravity currents produced by explosive volcanoes. They
are composed of a mixture of hot gas and particles of variable size. Evidences of
tsunamis generated by pyroclastic density currents (PDC) have been found from
tide gauges, deposits and observations for eruptions of Montserrat 2003. Among
the mechanisms that generated the tsunamis during the Krakatau eruption of
1883, pyroclastic flows are considered to be the principal source.
The model which seems to be appropriate to approach pyroclastic flows effect
on water in terms of mechanical action may be the inviscid fluid (or Newtonian
with low viscosity).
The first objective of this internship is to validate OPENFOAM against
available data produced in the same project. 
The second objective is to use OPENFOAM to simulate a 3D case of tsunami
generation at the Montagne Pelée, Lesser Antilles based on the simplified model
validated previously (i.e., inviscid flow). This part of the work will be performed
in collaboration with volcanologists from LMV Clermont Ferrand and IPGP
