Job Record #15610
TitleCSC scholarship in graphene nanofluidics
CategoryPhD Studentship
EmployerQueen Mary University of London
LocationUnited Kingdom, City of London, london
InternationalYes, international applications are welcome
Closure DateThursday, January 31, 2019
Description:
CONTEXT:

Botto's research group is interested in fundamental flow physics applied to multiphase flows,
soft matter engineering and surface tension phenomena.

The group is currently interested in graphene, seen as a colloidal suspension, and its
hydrodynamic properties. How does graphene deform in flow? How does it break? Answering
these questions has far-reaching consequences in applications such as nanocomposites,
lubricants, coatings printed electronics and nanodevices.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

If you are a Chinese student interested in joining the group, and you are eligible to apply to the
Chinese Research Council scholarship, consider making an application to QMUL's PhD
programme by the deadline of 31/1, by using the following link:

https://www.sems.qmul.ac.uk/research/studentships/284/sems-china-scholarship-council-
csc-phd-studentships-for-entry-in-september-2018

The successful candidate will be supported throughout the CSC application process and
his/her tuition fees waived. The PhD student will be supervised by Lorenzo Botto (QMUL,
London) and Nicola Pugno (U. of Trento, Italy, and QMUL). Academic travel and training
expenses for the CSC student are paid by the European Research Council grant
FLEXNANOFLOW.

The PhD student will work in London, in the School of Engineering and Materials Science at
Queen Mary University of London - QMUL.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

The tools that we are using are primarily theory and numerical simulations (both MD and
continuum). So a solid grounding in physics and math is really necessary. Academic knowledge
in fluid mechanics and/or general continuum mechanics is ideal. The group is setting up an
experimental lab, so students with experience in experimental work will also be considered.

IMPORTANT: students who are clearly not eligible for the CSC scholarship will not be
considered in the screening process.
