The aim of this research work is to experimentally and numerically characterise
the lateral development of an air jet through a vented wall with and without a
macro-porous medium. The experimental study will be performed on a reduced scale
model.  Different cases could be studied and assessed: (i) The reference case
related to a free wall jet development without vented wall. (ii) Wall jet with
vented wall; (iii) wall jet with a vented wall associated to a macro-porous
medium filled randomly by spheres of the same diameter. Velocity measurements
will be performed with LDV (Laser Doppler Velocimetry) system in air and with
heated spheres in the macro-porous medium.

Velocity measurements will allow building velocity profiles for the three cases
described abovealong the jet axis. Different comparisons performed with the
reference case allow to characterize the effect of the vented wall with and
without a macro-porous medium on the lateral jet development along the jet axis.  

The numerical approach will be performed on the CFD Fluent package in order to
predict the air jet development under the same configurations.  Numerical
simulations will take into account the jet characteristics and also the
dimensions, locations and the shape of the holes. The aim is to validate the
model by comparisons with experimental data. Different turbulence mode

Analysis of experimental and numerical data should help to better understand the
effect of a vented wall on the local airflow behaviour around the holes on the
two sides of the vented wall interface and to analyse their dynamic
interactions.  This helps to detect the continuity or discontinuity of velocity
profiles in the lateral direction through the vented wall and also to draw some
laws at the different internal vented wall interfaces, with and without a
macro-porous medium.

The work will take place in Antony near Paris at Irstea (National Institute for
Environmental and Agricultural Science and Research).  
This position requires a young or senior research scientist motivated to conduct
innovative research in the area of fluid dynamics. The minimum requirement: is a
Ph. D. related to airflow measurements and a good knowledge of numerical modelling. 
Duration: 18 months
Salary: 1600 to 1800 euros net /month according to experience
