Transport of micro organisms in porous media is a cutting edge research topic for various 
industries, experimentalists and computational experts. We recently developed models that simulate 
transport of bacteria in confined geometries representing porous media. The microswimmers are represented 
by molecular dynamics (MD) whereas the underlying fluid is represented by the lattice Boltzmann method 
(LBM). A biofilm which is a colony of bacteria that grows on surfaces is of interest in porous media research, 
dental plaque research as well as infection research. 

The master thesis topic will involve:

1. Application of models of bacterial dynamics to realistic porous geometries and study accumulation in 
porous media.

2. Study of adherence behavior of the bacteria under and around confinements.

3. Extension of the model to study motile and non-motile bacterial dynamics.

Scholarship options for exceptional students are available.
