Description:
Two postdoctoral positions, one in Cambridge University Engineering Department
(CUED) and another one in Newcastle University (NU), are available.  These two
positions are part of a 3-year research project funded by EPSRC, UK, to
investigate turbulent MILD combustion in droplet laden flows.  The objective of
this project is to enhance our physical understanding of liquid fuel combustion
under MILD conditions and to build closure models for sub-grid scale MILD
combustion.  Many OEMs of gas turbines have renewed interest on this combustion
concept because of improved thermal efficiency, sub-ppm level NOx and “silent”
combustion, offered by the MILD combustion.  

The postdoc at NU will work on DNS of this combustion to gather fundamental
insights which could help refining the sub-grid scale combustion closure.  This
refined closure will be utilised in LES to be conducted by the postdoc at CUED.
 Thus, a close collaboration between the CUED and NU teams is expected.  Both
candidates will have plenty of opportunities to interact closely with Combustion
Research Teams at CUED and NU and learn many complementary aspects of LES and
DNS practices, and also about MILD combustion.   Also, there is some
collaboration with experimental team at ULB, Belgium and University of Naples
Federico II, Italy, and so some travel to these places by the postdocs is
expected.  This project also involves some interaction with relevant industries,
which would bring some eye-opening insights from practical perspective.
