Description:
A fully funded PhD position is available on multiscale modeling of
particle/surface erosion due to solid particle impacts in flow systems. 

The project is in close collaboration with the Manufacturing Technology Centre
(The MTC, http://www.the-mtc.org). The student will have an industrial
supervisor and is expected to spend a secondment at The MTC. The student will
also have access to a generous research grant to cover costs, plus free access
to the relevant facilities at the MTC to obtain experimental data for validation
of the developed numerical models. Furthermore, the candidate will have access
to the high-performance computing (HPC) facilities including Cirrus
(http://www.cirrus.ac.uk/). 

Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain a first class honours degree in
relevant subject areas (e.g. Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering,
Applied Math or Physics). Strong analytical and programming skills in Fortran/C
(or willingness to learn) is also required. 

Desirable: A Masters degree with a focus on numerical modeling, particle-laden
CFD or high-performance computing (HPC). 

This is a 3.5 year fully funded scholarship which covers Home/EU tuition fees,
providing a tax free stipend of £15,009 for 2019/20 (subject to increase).

FEES AND STIPEND CAN ONLY BE AWARDED TO UK/EU STUDENTS. Furthermore, EU students
are only eligible for stipend if they have been resident in UK for 3 years,
including for study purposes, immediately prior to starting their PhD. If an EU
student cannot fulfill this condition then they are eligible for a fees only
studentship. International students can ONLY be funded if they are SETTLED in
the UK.
