 The University of Nicosia and the Defence and Security Research Institute:
The University of Nicosia (UNIC) is the largest university in Cyprus and the largest in Southern 
Europe that teaches primarily in English, with more than 12,000 students from over 70

The mission of the Defence and Security Research Institute (DSRI) is to undertake research 
and training activities in collaboration with partners in government; industry; and other 
academic and research centres nationally and internationally. The institute’s mission is also 
fully aligned to the European Union’s action plan to invest in the joint development of 
technologies and equipment of strategic importance for defence capabilities. Areas of priority 
include advanced modelling and simulation methods (e.g. CFD, multi-scale modelling and 
simulation, acoustics, amongst others); physics-based models; machine learning and artificial 
intelligence (AI); virtual reality. Defence Science and Technology have dual use, thus 
contributing to across the board of research and innovation. Therefore, the impact of DSRI’s 
work goes beyond conventional defence technology enhancement.

Job purpose:

• To undertake a leading role in advanced modelling and simulation methods (e.g. CFD, 
acoustics, multi-physics modelling amongst other areas), machine learning and AI models.
• To establish a high-quality research portfolio.
• To prepare research proposals for submission to funding bodies and industry.
• To publish research papers in high-quality journals and conference proceedings.
• To represent the university and the institute at meetings and research networks.
• To establish new Master programs in collaboration with other faculty from the University of 
Nicosia and its global academic and industrial partners.

Academic and Professional Qualifications:

• Education at a PhD level and relevant research experience in the broad field of 
computational science and engineering or machine learning are required.
• The ability to deliver high-quality research and publish research papers is essential.
• The competence to develop research proposals and pursue sources of funding to sustain 
and support research activity is required.
• Ideally, the appointee should have the knowledge and hands-on experience with a variety of 
computational tools and methods, including open source or industrial software.
