1. Job specification

Prof. Xuerui Mao’s research group at Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) is seeking postdoctoral researchers 
on the modelling and simulation of hypersonic flow, as well as the associated thermal management. 
The duty of the role is within the range of: 1) developing and programming novel algorithms based on a well-
tested solver (e.g. high-order shock capturing schemes, chemical reactions of the air), 2) performing large-
scale simulations of turbulent hypersonic flow over a body with various surface features, 3) conducting local 
and global thermal management of the body, 4) co-supervising postgraduate students and co-writing reports 
and papers.

The annual salary will be from 250K to 500K RMB depending on the experience and track record. Candidates 
from top 100 universities will be eligible to compete for an extra salary of 200K RMB per annum in a national 
scheme (the group was granted three in the past year). 

These positions last for two years and towards the end, outstanding candidates will be considered for faculty 
positions. 

2. Introduction to the research group

The research group manages three labs in different campuses of BIT and most of its academic staff are from 
world top 30 universities. The group maintains extensive collaborations with overseas universities via joint 
funding, e.g. Imperial College London, University of Nottingham, Oxford University, KTH, Johns Hopkins 
University and there are sufficient financial supports for regular mutual exchanges of researchers. The group 
has been funded by research councils and major industries in aerospace engineering and energy in the UK,

BIT is located in the centre of Beijing, and despite its small size, it is in the first groups of national higher 
education projects “211” and “985”, among a few other giant universities. It is ranked the 1st in China in 
research funding per staff. For international candidates, the university and the group will offer assistance in 
accommodation and settle down, and it is totally comfortable to speak English in the campus. 

3. Requirements:
PhD in math, mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or equivalent.
Publication record in top journals.
Capacity to communicate fluently in English.
Experiences on programming, developing numerical algorithms and high-performance-computing will be 
appreciated.
