Background

The Industrial Chair in Solidification at the Institut Jean Lamour (IJL), University of Lorraine in Nancy, France has been established with the support of five industrial companies: ArcelorMittal Industeel, ArcelorMittal Research, CEA, EDF, and Framatome, with the objective of strengthening research on solidification of metal alloys in France. The research involves the use of numerical simulation combined with experimental investigations. We are recruiting a Research Engineer, skilled in scientific computing who will be in charge of the development, maintenance, and use of numerical models and computational tools.

Responsibilities

The research engineer will develop tools for numerical simulation and for analysis of experimental data. She/he will also ensure the maninenance of the software developed in the research group. He/she will work in close collaboration with the researchers and students of the Industrial Chair on Solidification.

Activities:

  • Design and development of computer programs.
  • Verification and validation of numerical models.
  • Numerical simulation and data analysis.
  • Writing of documentation and scientific articles.
  • Training of researchers and interns on the use of numerical tools.

Requirements

  • PhD in engineering or physics
  • Expert knowledge in numerical methods for transport phenomena, expertise in the finite volume method.
  • Good notions of heat & mass transfer, fluid dynamics, phase change.
  • Proficiency in computer programming, experience in object-oriented programming in C++ and Python, MPI parallel programming, HPC.
  • Experience in development of solvers in OpenFOAM® is an advantage.
  • Good personal initiative.
  • Excellent teamwork skills.
  • Fluent English.

Contract

Fixed term contract for 3 years.

Salary

According to the pay scale of the Université de Lorraine.

4th trimester 2021

About Institut Jean Lamour

Institut Jean Lamour (IJL) is a joint research unit of the CNRS and the University of Lorraine and is one of the largest institutes in materials science and engineering in Europe. It covers the fields of materials, metallurgy, plasmas, surfaces, nanomaterials, and electronics. IJL has around 500 members, including 183 researchers, 91 engineers, technicians, administrative staff, 150 doctoral students, 30 post-docs, and welcomes about 80 interns every year. IJL collaborates with more than 150 industrial partners and its academic collaborations reach into 30 countries worldwide. Its exceptional instrumental park is spread over four sites, the main one being the new building located in the ARTEM campus in Nancy.

In the Solidification Group of IJL we study the formation of the structure during solidification of metal alloys, by numerical modeling and experimentation. We work on a wide spectrum of projects, integrating industrial and fundamental problems. Tight collaborations with the industry and with international academic partners are established and we are a core member of the Laboratory of Excellence DAMAS. The group currently comprises 5 permanent researchers, an engineer and 10 PhD students and postdoctoral fellows. Among other, we have strong expertise on numerical modeling and simulation from the scale of elementary physical phenomena up to the scale of industrial processes. We develop in-house codes and industrial software. Our main HPC tool is the regional computing center Explor.
