Low carbon solutions for power generation are, of course, of significant 
interest in today’s world. Legislative targets such as net zero by 2050 in the 
UK have required further developments of novel concepts across many sectors. 
For example, in aviation where combustion technologies feature almost 
exclusively, alternative fuels and new concepts must be further developed and 
understood to continue to play a role in low carbon transportation. Lean-burn 
technologies have been developed in recent decades but may suffer with flame 
stability.

Trapped Vortex Combustors (TVCs) use a cavity to ‘trap’ or ‘lock’ in a large 
rotating vortex in a stable manner thus maintaining flame stability. This PhD 
research project aims to explore the aerodynamics of trapped vortex combustors 
and analysis of flow stability and dynamic behaviour of hydrogen fuelled 
combustors, in particular compressibility and auto-ignition effects under high 
axial and radial accelerations. The project will work alongside a partner 
project at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and Sandia National 
Laboratory and make use of detailed Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) dataset. 
Large Eddy Simulation (LES) will be carried out to gain further insights into 
the flame dynamics. The project includes funding to support visits to partner 
institutions and conference attendance.

Entry requirements:
Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 Honours degree (or 
equivalent) in Automotive or Mechanical Engineering or a related subject. A 
relevant Master’s degree and/or experience in experimental fluid mechanics 
and/or computational fluid mechanics methods will be an advantage.

Funding information:
The studentship is for 3 years and provides a tax-free stipend of £15609 per 
annum (including top-up) for the duration of the studentship plus tuition fees 
at the UK/EU. International students may apply, however, the total value of the 
studentship will cover the international tuition fee only.
