Description:
The characterisation of transport mechanisms at a large scale cannot be envisioned without consideration of heterogeneities intrinsic to geological media. Such heterogeneities can be related to the variability of physical properties of the fluids and/or the media structure (pore distribution, mineral or organic phase properties). Considering these heterogeneities and under reactive processes that may modify the pore matrix (e.g. with dissolution, precipitation) as well as with the coupling of hydrodynamic processes at the small scale (limiting diffusion, preferential flow), the hydrodynamic
properties at the observation scale (e.g. permeability, retention curve, apparent kinetics, etc.) are modified.
The use of numerical upscaling techniques (DRP – Digital Rock Physics) based on simulations at the pore scale where heterogeneities and couplings are well described allows for a better understanding of such phenomena.
The thesis will focus on multiphase flow in mixed wettability medium and single phase flow and transport in reactive heterogeneous medium.

Skills - Master in engineering, applied mathematics or earth sciences.
Skills in programming, numerical modeling, geosciences, computational mechanics, fluid mechanics and reactive transport will be appreciated. Knowledge in C/C++ language will be strongly appreciated and knowledge in parallel programming will be welcomed. The candidate should show be motivated and autonomous.
