About the position:

We have fully-funded PhD positions available starting preferably Spring 2023 (and 
potentially Fall 2023). The applicant will need to apply to the University of Utah 
Mechanical Engineering PhD program. The student will join the Computational 
Biomechanics Group (https://bio.mech.utah.edu/) directed by Dr. Amir Arzani.  The 
student will be fully funded.

The project is about developing scientific machine learning models such as 
physics-informed neural networks (PINN) and data-driven reduced order models to 
model blood flow in cardiovascular disease. Specifically, we are interested in 
medical image analysis and obtaining blood flow information from medical imaging. 
The project involves CFD modeling of blood flow, advection-diffusion mass 
transport, data analysis, visualization, and deep learning. 

Required qualifications:
1-	Being highly self-motivated to do cutting edge research, publish in 
leading journals, and consistently present at leading fluid mechanics (APS DFD) 
and biomechanics (SB3C) conferences. 
2-	Strong background in fluid mechanics and computer programming. 
3-	Experience with computational modeling (numerical methods, CFD, etc.)
4-	Preferred: Experience with Python programming.
5-	Preferred: Background in deep learning and/or other data-driven modeling 
techniques.

group of motivated students. We emphasize student success and students enjoy

imaging institute (SCI) https://www.sci.utah.edu/  is one of University of Utah’s 
most research active units. SCI is internationally recognized with world-class 
leaders in scientific computing, image analysis, and visualization.   The student 
will be affiliated with SCI and the Mechanical Engineering Department and will 
enjoy all the facilities that SCI offers (e.g., a nice free coffee machine for 
students to get latte or cappuccino!).

programs ranked among the best public schools in the US. 

We are located in the beautiful Salt Lake City (Utah), which is ranked as one of 
the best cities to live in the US. There are several national parks within driving 
distance with plenty of outdoor activities (skiing, hiking, etc.) and indoor 
activities like sports (NBA, pac 12 football,…) and concerts.
