Accurate estimates of hull girder loads are crucial to an optimized design of 
sailing ships. However, while such calculations are considered satisfactory on 
mild waves, extreme behavior is still subject to approximations. The design 
practices usually involve long simulations from which the statistical 
distribution of the extreme events is identified. These simulations are 
generally done with potential linear solvers, which have some limitations. For 
this reason the design methodology consider large safety factors. Using CFD, one 
can get very accurate simulations, however the computational cost is heavy, and 
only a set of simulations over a short duration is practically possible. 

The PhD thesis will thus aim to study the balance precision/cost induced by the 
settings, the models, and the workflow, in order to improve the performance of 
CFD to simulate longer time series. If required a coupling with a structural 
solver will be considered.

The work is carried out in the IIHNE team of the LHEEA within the framework of 
the Ecole Centrale – Bureau Veritas Chair, with numerous interactions with the 
Bureau Veritas research department. The CFD code co-developed in this Chaire 
framework is based on OpenFOAM. 

We are looking for a motivated candidate, with strong background in 
hydrodynamics. Interest on software development and applied mathematics will be 
strongly appreciated.

The position will be filled when a suitable candidate will be found.
