TitlePhD Bathymetric lenses: wave focusing for coastal protection
CategoryPhD Studentship
EmployerUniversity of Manchester
LocationUnited Kingdom, Manchester
InternationalYes, international applications are welcome
Closure DateWednesday, December 10, 2025
Description:
This fully funded PhD will explore how engineered seabed features can be used to focus, enhance, or dissipate wave energy. Building on recent research showing that certain seabed features can amplify local wave amplitudes by up to 15 times [1], the project will investigate how carefully designed “wave lenses” can boost wave energy extraction or trigger wave breaking for coastal protection. These submerged designs also offer potential ecological benefits compared to traditional structures. Working at the University of Manchester’s new Hydrodynamics Laboratory(https://www.scieng.manchester.ac.uk/tomorrowlabs/manchester-hydrodynamic-lab/), you will combine physical experiments with advanced computer modelling techniques, including smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), simplified “linear” wave models, and machine learning to link fast-running models with high-fidelity simulations. https://www.findaphd.com/phds/project/fse-bicentenary-phd-bathymetric-lenses-wave-focusing-mechanisms-for-coastal-protection-strategies-and-energy-extraction/?p188751
