The Fire and Explosion Modelling Group (FEMG) at University of Surrey is seeking a Research Fellow to
work on CFD modelling of accidental releases of ammonia using OpenFOAM.
The Fire and Explosion Modelling Group (FEMG) at University of Surrey is seeking a Research Fellow to
work on Ammonia Release Safety Modelling using OpenFOAM.
The post is funded by the UK Research and Innovation through the UK-HyRES (Hydrogen and Alternative
Liquid Fuels Research) Hub flexible scheme. You will use the in-house modified OpenFOAM to simulate the
atmospheric dispersion of ammonia following accidental releases, considering the exothermic chemical
reactions between ammonia and water as well as the aerosol characteristics of ammonia cloud.
The project will involve collaboration with industry and an existing researcher who will conduct finite
element analysis to quantify source terms for ammonia releases. You will develop and validate a robust
modelling approach for consequence analysis of ammonia releases and characterize the resulting airborne
hazardous cloud. On the basis of the CFD analysis, you will also formulate recommendations for safe
protocols for NH3 transport by sea and bunkering; and mitigation measures in case of accidental releases.
As part of the UK-HyRES Hub, you will benefit from the networking opportunities. It is also possible to
work across FEMG’s other projects like CFD modelling of hydrogen fires and explosions.
We are interested to hear from researchers with PhD in a relevant discipline (although individuals who have
almost completed a doctoral degree may be appointed). Experience in CFD simulations using OpenFOAM
will be essential. Experience in OpenFOAM modification is also desirable.
This is a full-time position available to start as soon as possible. The appointment will initially be until 31
July 2027 but fund is in place top extend it for a further six months beyond that this date. For an informal
discussion about the post, please contact Prof. Jennifer Wen (FREng); j.wen@surrey.ac.uk Information
