Ansys Mechanical Revolute Joint Retrict Rotation to One Direction
Hi
In Ansys Mechanical how can I make a revolute joint that only spins in one direction? Specifically, I have a crankshaft and if it receives a force that would move the joint counterclockwise, I want the joint to not allow the movement, but if the force is in the clockwise direction it should move. I've not tried this but here goes: maybe since the Revolute Joint has UX, UY, UZ, ROTX and ROTY as fixed and ROTZ as free you could use a Bushing Joint and for ROTZ use the Tabular to input a non-linear angle-moment curve that has very low angular stiffness in the direction you want (e.g. positive angle direction) rotation and very high angular stiffness in the direction you want no rotation (e.g. negative angle direction).

I'm trying to generate the Bushing Joint with 2 Stiffness Coefficients over Z axis as you suggest, but I can only find one place to enter a Stiffness Coefficient for it. Please see the attached file for the Worksheet of the Stiffness and Damping Coefficients for the Bushing Joint. For this reason, I can't enter a positive AND a negative value for it. Could you elaborate on the procedure to get the 2 Stiffness Coefficients for rotation over Z? Thanks again!

This is explained in the Mechanical User Guide help/wb_sim/ds_Joints_types_bushing.html.
In the Bushing Joint Worksheet, RMB on cell in the stiffness main diagonal and select Tabular. So select Delta Moment Z (N m), Per Unit Theta z (rad) and enter 3 datapoints for minimum, origin (0,0) and maximum. Have a look at the Joint Stops and Locks in the Mechanical User Guide: help/wb_sim/ds_stops_locks.html. I've not needed use that, hence mentioning Bushing Joints, but it might suit your requirement. |
I can confirm that the simulation running using a bushing joint and tabular data with 3 points as suggested by SIW worked as expected.
