CFD for Micro-Scale Flows
This course gives discusses in depth the flow physics associated with micro-scale flows, and details the methods which can be employed to analyse them. This includes the use of continuum models (CFD) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) approaches, including the limitations of the two methods. Current cutting edge multiscale modelling approaches are also detailed, where both large and small scale effects come into play.

Type of Event: Conference, International

Who shoudl attend?

This course is ideal for those who are:

    * looking to employ CFD/MD for micro-scale flow problems
but are not sure how/where to start
    * SMEs wanting to include CFD in their design process
for micro-flow devices
    * experienced engineers who would like a refresher
course on the current state-of-the-art in micro-flow simulation.

The candidate will gain a detailed understanding of the
physics of micro-scale flows, what computational tools can
be used to analyse such flows and what are the limitations
of each computational method. Furthermore, you will
understand the interaction of the different scales and how
multiscale approaches work.

The employee/sponsor will benefit from a researcher who has
a thorough base in micro-scale flows. They will be capable
of understanding the flow physics of a given micro device,
choosing an appropriate modelling method, applying it and
verifying the accuracy of the results.

The course features lectures on an Introduction to micro-
and nanoscale phenomena; Application of CFD methods in
micro- and nanoscience; Borderline continuum/molecular
models and their domains of applicability; and Multiscale
modelling. It also features a hands-on session using the
commercial software FLUENT to simulate micro-scale flows.
