Validation and Verification for Credible CFD
This course introduces the concepts of error and uncertainty and how they relate to the credible numerical solution of the partial differential equations encountered in computational fluid mechanics. of continuum models (CFD) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) approaches, including the limitations of the two methods. Current cutting edge multiscale modelling approaches are also detailed, where both large and small scale effects come into play.

Type of Event: Conference, International

Description:

Who shoudl attend?

This course is ideal for:

    * engineers/scientists running and analysing CFD simulations
    * engineers/scientists responsible for making decisions
based on CFD results
    * managers who want to enforce a strict quality
assurance methodology as part of their CFD process.

Benefits

Upon completion of the course you will be able to:

    * discriminate between error and uncertainty in
computational simulations
    * recognise potential sources of error and uncertainty
    * employ tools to quantify error and uncertainty.

Upon return to the sponsoring organisation the candidate
will be able to plan and perform credible computational
simulations, addressing in a quantifiable manner the error
and uncertainties present in the simulation. The ability to
specify clearly the computational errors is often as
valuable, if not more valuable, than the solution itself.

Topics

The course features lectures on Consistency, Stability and
Convergence; Taxonomies of Error and Uncertainty; Principles
of Code Verification; Introduction to Manufactured
Solutions; Principle of Solution Verification; Role of
Systematic Grid Convergence Studies.
