The bottom line business goal for product development is to produce the best design as efficiently as possible. In many companies, simulation already is a key tool in the product design process to try to realize this objective. Sometimes simulation is leveraged early in the design cycle by investigating a set of pre-determined candidate designs, which has been shown to be a highly effective use of virtual tests over physical tests. Other times simulation is used alongside physical validation tests to determine whether the design meets specifications and to explore selected failure modes.

Numerical and computational advances in the past couple of years make broad design exploration and optimization practical within the design cycle. This greatly expands the effectiveness of the early-design simulation by avoiding the limitation of pre-selected candidate designs; instead entire families of candidate designs can be identified. The next stage of leveraging simulation involves exploring the robustness of these families to select the design that best meets performance specifications and maximizes design reliability.

This seminar will explore the capabilities of STAR- CCM+® to identify families of feasible designs, understand design sensitivities, and predict system robustness. A specific electronics cooling example will be optimized and tested for sensitivity and robustness under varying manufacturing and usage scenarios to produce a better design faster than ever before.
