OpenSource CFD for Industry - Basic Usage (Efficient Use of Linux, OpenFOAM and Paraview), Nov 2014, Sweden

Posted By: Hakan Nilsson
Date:Fri, 8 Aug 2014, 8:01 a.m.

Sweden, November 10, 2014

This basic course is mainly based on the Linux operating
system, the OpenFOAM OpenSource CFD toolbox, and the
Paraview visualization software. The course is given as a
hands-on workshop, in a computer lab. The basic procedures
are shown using a projector, and time is left for the
participants to follow on their own designated and
pre-installed computer. The course language is English.

Description:

The present course is the first of two courses (2+2 days).
It covers the basic knowledge that is needed to efficiently
use OpenSource software, while the follow-up course extends
the knowledge to high-level code development. This basic
course is mainly based on the Linux operating system, the
OpenFOAM OpenSource CFD toolbox, and the Paraview
visualization software. The course is given as a hands-on
workshop, in a computer lab. The basic procedures are shown
using a projector, and time is left for the participants to
follow on their own designated and pre-installed computer.
The course language is English.

After the course, the participant should be able to:

* Efficiently use Linux, OpenFOAM and Paraview

* Manage the software installation and execution

* Set up and run CFD simulations using the OpenFOAM
technology, including:

o Mesh generation with blockMesh and m4 scripting

o Mesh conversion with OpenFOAM utilities

o Mesh modification with OpenFOAM utilities

o Solver set-up

o Numerical set-up

o Specification of boundary conditions

o Specification of physical properties

o Parallel execution

* Manipulate the cases and analyse the results using:

o OpenFOAM utilities and functionObjects

o pyFoam

o paraFoam/Paraview

o Gnuplot

o Xmgrace

o Python

* Read the top-level code of applications and utilities
(as a short introduction to the second high-level
development course)

* Continue learning using the installed code

The course is useful for engineers and researchers who are
interested in Computational Fluid Dynamics with OpenSource
software. It focuses on how to use OpenSource software for
CFD, and it is assumed that the participant already has a
basic knowledge of the underlying theories of CFD. Very
simple tutorial cases are used throughout the course since
they are fast to execute, but they can still be used to
learn how to manage more complex cases. The softwares are
general, and are used in industry and academia for all kinds
of industrial and academic applications. A significant part
of the course is to learn how to continue learning, i.e. how
to learn from the installed code also after course.

If you are interested in taking the course you should send
an e-mail to hani@chalmers.se, and you will be put in a list
that will be used for further information until the course
starts, and for future announcements. You may at any time
ask to be removed from that list. The formal registration is
done through Chalmers Professional Education
(http://www.chalmersprofessional.se/en).
