2D Strucured and unstructured meshing in one geometry

Hi all,
I am new ICEM and am trying to generate a 2D hybrid mesh (structured and unstructured mesh in one geometry). I am tried to emulate a 3D hybrid cylinder tutorial (ICEM 10) in which a a hybrid mesh is made in a cylinder divided into parts and I was sucessfull. But when I generate unstructured mesh in one areas of the 2D figure then complete 2D figure becomes meshed by unstructured mesh. What are the steps i need to follow for 2D hybrid meshing? is it possible to generate 2D hybrid mesh ? Last edited by stanabng; May 16, 2012 at 18:10. |

Hi, i think i can be of help to you until a certain stage. I tried to do the same stuff by creating a 2D box around the system (in your case cylinder). After this the flow field boundaries are created at a very far away region as required by you..Now you can create blocks and associative it to the box which you created near the cylinder and create structured mesh. Later using the curves from the flow field boundary and the box, you can create unstructured mesh in this region. This will not overlap your structured mesh..
My problem is i am unable to join the two meshes at the boundary. Without doing that, this is of no use.. |

Hmm..
that gave me some idea. My case is that I have three rectangles one below other with common sides as i have uploaded in my first post. I want structured in middle rectangle but unstructured on the below and above rectangles... |

Its still the same..just put a box one the middle rectangle and mesh it with blocks..Then use the top and bottom curves of top most rectangle to create unstructured mesh..Similarly with the bottom most rectangle

About the unstructured mesh, I should be doing a volume mesh correct?

Since you are in 2 D, you dont need a vol mesh..Create a big surface, trim the centre rectangle from this one...Create surface mesh on this trimmed surface..
But remember, you need to find out a way to connect the structured and unstructured nodes..Only then will this be useful..Do tell me when you find out |

Hi,
I got it how to do it. Once you do the surface set up, you go to curve setupp and make sure that you have the same number of nodes in the interface curve. I did it that way and after checked the mesh it was fine. Later I extruded it and exported it to CFX aso.. |
