Sub topo and merge blocking are very good for simple blocking.
But for complicated blocking with a lot of cuts, merging meshes is way more efficient ! Keep in mind that we use 2 different blockings for a reason : it's not possible to create one big blocking (geometry changes which means cuts in the blocking everwhere).
