Or at least as far as I would have. They used the option to change blocking material so they could have fluid and solid regions. Of course, the geometry needs to have a surface between these regions for the interface to project to. Once it is meshed and set to the solver, Fluent will make a shadow for each interface and you can setup your zones as fluid and solid. Not sure why it would diverge on you... It is a pretty basic setup. The mesh looks good, maybe you need to take the Fluent problem to the Fluent Forum...
