Data Interpolation onto Fluent Grids

Hi,
I'm intending to run a series of steady-state simulations in which the geometry & grid evolve as a function of the solution from one simulation to the next. I'd like to be able to use the results (in data file) from the previous solution to be interpolated (as initial guess) onto a new grid which represents the next step of the evolved geometry and may have a different number of cells. Does anybody know how to do this in Fluent 4.5 and/or Fluent 5 ?? or any software that can do this procesing for me ?? (I'd like to avoid writing more code!) Thanks Greg Perkins |

Greg,
FLUENT's GUI already has this capability. Using an existing solution, go to: FILE-->INTERPOLATE and a sub-panel will open up to allow you to write out a solution to an *.ip file. Then, once you have read in your new grid, go to FILE --> INTERPOLATE and this time read in and interpolate the *.ip file. I've tried it and it seemed to work well. The only difficulty I encountered was in trying to keep the solution stable within the first 5-10 inerations of a newly interpolated mesh. Since FLUENT does a spacial interpolation, if your mesh boundaries changes and thier is now a spacial mesh where one didn't exist in the prior solution, FLUENT doesn't have a near valid flow field in these areas. One might try dropping relaxation factors very low for 5-10 iterations or "patching" a solution guess into these regions. Happy Computing... Glenn Brown Siemens Westinghouse |

Hello Glenn,
I am wondering if it is possible to initialize a 3D case using a previously obtained 2D data assuming in the third direction the flow is uniform in the beginning. I am trying to re-edit the exported interpolation file manually. But it does not sound like an easy job and a good way. How do you think? Cheers, Raymond |
