I have to modelise the wind field on a wind farm with fluent. I use gambit 2.0 to create the mesh. The only data I have is a file in DXF format (Autocad file), representing level lines.

So, has somebody already used this kind of files with gambit ? If no, is there someone who can help me to integrate such a file in gambit to create a mesh of the ground of my wind farm ?

We have converted AutoCad files to acis (*.sat) or iges files for import to Gambit. My opinion was that acis worked better.

Oh, I just ask the guys in our design department. More seriously though, I understand there is an add-on package available for purchase from Autodesk, or a third party, that allows saving as a *.sat file.

Ironically, some of the less expensive "clone" CAD programs - TurboCAD comes to mind - have this feature built in. You can download a trial version of one these programs to do the conversion. I have done this before, but then you get junk mail from them for years.

There are some dxf to iges translators on the web (probably dxf to sat as well), but I never found one that would read into gambit.

Complain to your Fluent rep. about the lack of a translator.

I use a cad program called Rhinoceros to convert dxf to iges files. It works pretty well. I think there is an free evaluation version available which allows you to convert and save about 20 times.

I used Rhinoceros to convert my dxf file into igs file. It works perfectly, but when I read the igs file in gambit, the resolution is very bad, the curves overlap...It seems there are no curves anymore but lines instead !!! (only for some of them) Do you already have this problem ? Are there parameters in Rhinoceros to choose the quality of my igs file ?

In fact when I read this file whith Rhinoceros, the quality is very good, it's just when I import it in Gambit that I loose the resolution...
