Hi Mr. Nishit Joseph or JLight
I'm a Master Student studying on Design of Gas Turbine Engine. I want to analyze my design with OpenFOAM. I'm a window user and found your projectOpenFOAM-1.7.0 for Win32 on sourceforge.net.
First of all, I like to appreciate your contribution and effort.
But I'm facing difficulty on using OpenFOAM 1.7.0 for Win32.
1. I've downloaded the OpenFOAM-1.7.0.7z and README.txt from http://sourceforge.net/projects/openfoam-170/files/.
2. Extract the zipped files and follow the instructions.
3. I installed the MPICH2 software.
Then I don't know what to do. Fortunately I found the other process from this link
http://openfoamwiki.net/index.php/Ti...ows_with_MinGW

  1. Open a command line (Start->Run... or Winkey+R and run cmd.exe).
  2. Go to the bin folder where MPICH2 is installed (e.g. cd C:\Program Files\MPICH2\bin).
  3. Type:smpd -installto install the MPICH2 smpd service.
  4. Now run the OpenFOAM terminal (double click on the file DOS_Mode.bat).
  5. Type: mpiexec.exe -register
  6. In the OpenFOAM terminal, go to the folder ofuser-1.6 (or $USER-1.6) and unpack the test case PTestCase.tar.gz;
  7. Go into the pTestCase case folder;
  8. Type:gompi parallelTest
I did all the step and everything fine except the step no.6. I found parallelTest.exe in the directory \OpenFoam\USRNAME-1.7.0\applications\bin\linuxmingw-w32DPOpt\ . So I ran DOS_Mode.bat and change directory to the above directory. and type

gompi parallelTest

Then I got an error message instead of showing test case.

Error: must specify a number greater than 0 after the -n option
Unable to parse the mpiexec command arguments.

Well I don't know how to continue. Could you give me some guides on this issue.

Now I'm using Window 7 Ultimate Version.
Processor: Intel Core(TM)2 Duo T550 @ 1.83Ghz
Memory : 2.00 GB
System type: 32 bit Operation System

Sony VAIO VGN-NR385E NoteBook.

Thanks in advance!
Sincerely
Technoyoungman

Hey technoyoungman,

if you are using W7 and don 't want to get linux or some distribution you can use a LIVE DVD which load ubuntu and all tools and applications / programs for pre-processing - solving and post-processing.

maybe some suggestion

http://caelinux.com

include OpenFOAM 1.7

Best regards
Tobi

Hi Tobi
Thanks for your suggestion. I got 32 bit OS and I have no knowledge of Linux or Ubuntu OS.:confus ed:
Well, I'll try anyway. That's a huge ISO to download.

Hi Technoyoungman
Happy you like the post. Regarding your problem...

Frankly i do not use your method so i may not be able to help you .... what i normally do to run a parallel execution of (for example) sonicFoam i use

mpiexec -n 2 sonicFoam -parallel

The "-n 2" indicated to use 2 processes so if you can run 8 you will use "-n 8"

Using your method ... i am not sure where you will have to define "-n #" where (# >=1 ). The problem is i do not have the program anymore ... as i have shifted to Linux completely and.. my internet connection is slow so cannot afford to download the file again and look into one batch file

Try the way i told you... but if you want to use your way ... try editing the batch file to ensure the arguments "-n #" is passed to mpiexec (# >=1 )

Cheers!

Good luck

Hi JLight,
Thanks you for your reply. Actually I haven't known how to start and run openfoam in Dos Mode. Now, I can run it on my W7. It works well. I mean tutorials. But I don't find doxygen folder in the doc directory. Is it needed or not? Will you continue your OpenFOAM for MS Window project, if u moved to Linux?

Hi Alain CFD!!
You don't have to run these tasks. I took misunderstand. All u need are
1. Download the file
2. Unzip it
3. Install MPICH2 for 32 Bit Operation System. *
**(If ur system is 64 Bit just ignore it. Let's say 32 Bit)
So You have two options here. It is written on the project page. If u installed the MPICH2 follow the lower instruction, or else follow the upper one.

Installation Instructions

001 Extract the folder
002 If you can/want-to install MPICH2 goto line 100
003 Edit \OpenFOAM\setvars.bat in your fav text editor
004 locate 'set WM_MPLIB=MPICH' (line 139)
005 comment the line by typing rem before set
006 Uncomment the line above this line such that it says
007+ set WM_MPLIB=dummy (line 138)
008 start using OpenFOAM by running dosmode.bat
009 END

100 Install Provided MPICH2 or download form MPICH2 website
101 Edit \OpenFOAM\setvars.bat in your fav text editor
102 locate variable PATH (line 202) and edit the last
103+ entry 'C:\Program Files\MPICH2\bin' to reflect the bin
104+ directory of MPICH2 on your computer
105 start using OpenFOAM by running dosmode.bat
106 END

That means u don't have to change anything if u installed the MPICH2 and don't change it's installed directory.

Then U can start ur first tutorial.
1. Double click or run DOS_Mode.bat
You will see like that on the Dos Screen C:\OpenFoam\

2. change ur directory to the tutorial directory.
cd USRNAME-1.7.0\tutorials\incompressible\icoFoam\cavity\

3. now lets create the mesh. Type!
blockmesh

4. Wait a bit. It is now meshing until Dos show u the tutorials directory
"C:\OpenFoam\USRNAME-1.7.0\tutorials\incompressible\icoFoam\cavity\"

5. Well U can view the mesh now. Type!
parafoam
Wait ParaView will launch and u can view the mesh. Just read user guide.

6. now it is simulation time. in Dos Window type!!
icoFoam
U will see the Dos is showing the processing. Wait until Dos show u the tutorials directory.

7. close Paraview and Type in Dos
parafom

Now u have done ur fisrt tutorials
:P

Hi,

The prebuilt OpenFoam code really saves a lot of work, time and trouble!
Thanks a lot!!

Unfortunately in my case, I do not get any of those tutorials running where there is porous media involved.
They all stop after creating the porous zone;
e.g. for tutorial “filter” the last lines in log.porousExplicitSourceReactingParcelFoam are

Creating porous zones

Creating porous zone: filter

Also for log.rhoPorousSimpleFoam of angledDuctExplicit the execution ends suddenly with the last line being:

Creating porous zone: porosity

Anyone an idea?
Does this only happen for me?

Another strange thing (which is probably not related to my problem), is that the log file always tells me
“SigFpe : Enabling floating point exception trapping (FOAM_SIGFPE).”
no matter how I set the environment variable FOAM_SIGFPE.

Any help is apprcciated,
Andreas

Hi guys!

This cross-compiled openFOAM 1.7.0 for win32 seems like a very useful option for us to get familiar around the CFD techniques despite a lengthy sequence and "requirements" needed to penetrate towards commercial CFD tools.

FYI, I am a regular user of ANSYS products, and planning to switch to this open-source solver after realising lots of potentials that could be made here. Easy access to multi-processing capability, Enable a high penetration to user-defined functions and so on.

Im just keen to get know the proper sequence to execute this solver, like what kind of file extensions readable by the mesher,
How to execute a mesh software from the DOS application.

It is typical to begin run a simulation by first modelling the geometry and then equipped the model with meshes. Im really lost at this stage

I followed some of the tutorial from the package and suggests from this forum but yet to access to the mesher . I know there is very limited source out there for the manuals for this cross-compiled solver dedicated for windows OS, but any hint or guidance is very highly appreciated
Thanks in advance.
