Change wallDist to return volVectorField

I need to calculate the distance from a patch in horisontal and vertical direction separately for all cells. I have tried to use functionality from wallDist.H. This works well except that it returns the distance as a volScalarField. Can anyone give me a suggestion on how to modify walldist.H (or the stuff it uses - patchWave etc. ), to return the distance as a volVectorField?
