To do a gradient you need boundary conditions. Your program (whatever that may be) does not know the boundary condition on patch inlet of field pdash so uses the default ones (which on purpose do not allow gradient operations on them).

Either read your field with the correct boundary conditions before assigning internal values or use one of the constructors of GeometricField to construct-as-copy-resetting-patch-type.
