Hi,

Volvo Cars Corporation in Gothenburg, Sweden asked me to announce a Master Thesis prooposition here in the OpenFOAM Forum. The project is about external flow on cars, and flow-induced noice. The project should start in the very beginning of 2009. See the attached exjobb_caa_annons2009.doc .

Hi Dott. Nilsson,
is there any PhD stage period available for this project?
I'm a PhD student in Politecnico di Torino (Italy) and I'm looking for a period abroad (more or less 6 months). I'm working on external flow noise, in particular SNGR, and I'm a OF user since 2007.

Hi Ivan,

Unfortunately I met people from Volvo last week, and they had to withdraw this master thesis proposition.

You can of course still contact Jonas and see if there is any possibility to arrange something together with him and our department. I know that this is in his interest, and if there will be no cost for Volvo...
We also have an interest in external flow noice at our department.

Hi Professor Nilsson

I am a Portuguese MSc in Mechanical engineering, and I would like to help develop tools foe aerodynamic analysis/shatpe optimization within OpenFOAM framework.

I have some experience in CFD analysis with FLUENT as well as with the OpenFOAM code, having used it to analyze and estimate the drag of an award winning car of Shell EcoMarathon from Universidade de Coimbra in Portugal

I also have some background on genetic Optimization techniques and specific algorythms, and I would like to use their potential in finding an optimum aerodynamic shape within geometric constraints.

Hi Alexandre,

It is nice that you would like to do your developments in OpenFOAM.

What was the purpose of your post? To make contact?

Aerodynamic shape optimization is currently not in line with my research. We have other people doing that at our department, but they are currently not using OpenFOAM.

I am also doing Aerodynamic shape optimization in vehicle design. You mentioned you have other people doing that at our department, but they
are currently not using OpenFOAM. What are they using for software. I had heard that TetruSS from NASA was an excellant software. Your thoughts?

The purpose of my contact was to see if I could apply to work with Volvo in aerodynamic studies, taking a PhD program within a Swedish University involved with this project...

If this would be in the interest of Volvo and that University, of course...

Hi Steve,

The one I'm thinking of is Dr. Krajnovic. He is using Fire for the CFD part at the moment, due to a collaboration with the developers of Fire. I'm sure that you can do the same with OpenFOAM. We also have a complete division working on vehicles in all kinds of ways, including external flow. I can't tell you much about it however. I think that they are using Fluent. There can be many different reasons behind the decision of using a specific CFD tool...

Hi Alexandre,

Chalmers posts all vacant PhD positions at the link below. We have to, for legal reasons, and it also helps us get the best person for the job. In other words, there is no such PhD position vacant at the moment unless you find it in the link. Of course, both Volvo and our department are interested as soon as anyone is willing to give us some money to do the job.

I have found some pdf documents reporting to an OpenFOAM introductory course in Chalmers, in the late 2007 ( I guess...) , could you give me the link to all OpenFOAM related materials in OpenFOAM courses of 2008 if there were any in 2008...?

I reaaly would like to enhance my abilities as a Foamer, meaning... become a develpoer for OF-1.5, and get to know some of its improved solvers...

can you give me those links... ?

I know this is not the right place to post this, but I have been sein your code rodFoam, and i am tryin to port it into a code of mine, lets say mhdIcoFoam, to solve for laminar, incompressible magnetoHydrodynamic flow...

My question is the following, is it allright to calculate Lorentz force as the vectorial product of E and B and some constant depending on magnetic permeability and electric permitivity of the medium, and add that Force term in the Navier Stokes equations in icoFoam, considering that the electric and magnetic fields are stationary and the flow velocity is small...?

First set up magnetic and electric field calculation, stationary in reference frame, then calculate the point force within each finite volume and consider it as a body force in the flow...

Water in a duct for example...?

Have you tried the following in Google: "rodFoam Chalmers" :-) ?

Personally, I find the information available from the Chalmers website to be quite amazing, and very helpful... I would like to thank you for making it available (either knowingly or unknowingly :-)!) to the openFOAM community...

If I Google "rodFoam Chalmers" I get the URL Alexandre was asking for, so that is why I didn't understand how the URL could be missed.

when I posted the question about where to find OpenFoam material, I had not yet googled around to find Chalmers workshop event... After I did so, I found it... only then did I find rodFoam, since to my present knowledge, if I google rodFoam, the only reference that I find is to Chalmers workshop...

I am now in the process of building my own viscous incompressible laminar MHD solver... as a matter of fact I already made a Hybrid of IcoFoam and RodFoam, I posted the code in http://www.cfd-online.com/cgi-bin/Op...cus/discus.cgi
a few minutes ago... but i seems a bit buggy...

I built a case of a rectangular duct flow subjected to Lorentz Force created by two mutually orthogonal Electric field and Magnetic field,... I you want it I can also post my blockMeshDict, and initial values of A, Sigma, U, p, and Elpot...

My goal is to build a general MHD-Euler code to be able to capture shocks in plasmas, but this is quite a long shot... have lots of reading to do before...

Do you by any chance happen to know if it is possible to include any radiant transport equation s in say g3dFoam eulerian code, using the OF-1.5 classe definitions... does OpenFOAM-1.5 solve for multispectral radiation transport in translucent media.. ( plasmas )...?

Hello,

I am not sure if anyone is still reading this topic, but I have a question related to rodFoam:

I have implemented a similar solver that solves for dc currents and electric potential with inhomogeneous conductivity using div(sigma * grad(phi))=0. However, I'm facing a problem that was also mentioned in this thesis: http://webfiles.portal.chalmers.se/e...heHuangMSc.pdf :
For high conductivities the electric potential isn't calculated correctly in the cell next to the boundary, resulting in incorrect electric fields and incorrect currents (so that the current entering the mesh doesn't equal the outgoing current). For small conductivities this problem becomes negligible.

I have tried a few different discretization schemes, under relaxation and similar things without success, always getting the same value in the electric field.

As I am interested in determining the conductance this is obviously a huge problem

Anybody got an idea what might be the cause for this? Could it be a numerical problem? If yes, is it reasonable to solve the equation for the potential with a scaled sigma field? The solution shouldn't differ, right?

Edit: Tried again, right now I can't reproduce that it works better with lower conductivities . I also tried multiplying all kinds of values to the sigma field in the equation for phi without any difference.
Could it be related to boundary conditions? Sigma uses zero gradient and phi uses fixed values to apply a voltage.
