I have this problem...
  • a slab of metal in a room.
  • a fan feeding hot air into the room.
What I want is the temperature distribution inside the metal slab. Is it at all possible to use OpenFOAM in this case? The chtMultiRegionFoam tutorial makes me feel weak.

I'm thinking of simulating the airflow first and then feeding the results into a heat transfer simulation of the slab. Could work for a steady state solution, right?

How to do this for an unsteady state I have no idea. I guess chtMultiRegionFoam is it.

Comments, suggestions, a friendly word - anything is welcome!

Perhaps this should've been posted in the OpenFOAM Running / Solving / CFD-subforum, if so I'm sorry and wish for the thread to be moved to its appropriate place. Or maybe I was not able to make myself understood, so I'll try again.

Same problem as above, i.e:
  • room with metal slab/cube
  • there is an inlet and an outlet to the room
  • the inlet is feeding the room with air ~900 degrees K
  • the model is 2d, top view
ASCII schematic:
Code:
---outlet---------------
| |
| |
| ------- |
| | slab | |
| | | |
| ------- |
| |
| |
-----------------inlet---
What I'd like is the temperature distribution inside the metal slab at any given time. Is it possible to simulate airflow and heat transfer with OpenFOAM in one go?

I'm thinking no, so my suggestion is to use the airflow simulations I've done with simpleFoam to approximate the heat transfer coefficients at different points around the metal slab. Using laplacianFoam I could then calculate the temperature inside the slab at various times.

I'd really appreciate it if someone could find the time to confirm, reject or discuss my proposal.
