I am not sure your method to build model, but if it is right as the attachment shows, extrusion from sketch would help. And there may be no other more convenient way, as far as I know.

You can draw lines on the sketch of the target 2D...

You can draw lines on the sketch of the target 2D plane, then split the surface with the lines to create the islands.

BTW, this is something like the solar module, with two reinforce strips on...
