[ICEM] Unstructured "all quad" mesh in ICEM Block Method

Default Unstructured "all quad" mesh in ICEM Block Method

Hi, everybody.
I use ICEM Block Method Module as grid generator.
How can I do that the face selected to sweep be meshed with unstructured (not regular) "all quad" mesh. I know how to do it in case with surface meshing but not with block.

Go to Blocking Tab => Edit Block => Convert Block Type.

This is probably where you made your block a swept block, you can also use it to change a free block face to free (from mapped).

In this case, you would set the Type to "Free Face Mesh Type". You can select options like "all tri" or "quad dominant", then select the swept source face...

Tada.

Note: I am using 12.1, the current release.

Thank you. I can see the option "Blocking Tab => Edit Block => Convert Block Type -> swept block", but it doesn't work properly - I need only hexa elements, no one tetra element.

So if you want to use swept, change the "free face mesh type" to "all quad". Then the sweep will turn those quads into all hexa...

Otherwise, perhaps you should be looking into the regular (not swept) blocking.

Ok, sometimes I get unstructured all hexa mesh, but it does not always work. ICEM seems to be an unfinished program. There are many other bugs there.

MultiZone (the sweeping stuff) came out at 11.0. It got a lot better at 12.1. What version are you using?

But yes, it is relatively new (doesn't have as many years as regular hexa) but it is getting lots of development attention as people are expecting great things...

In this case, I assume you are asking for all quad and it sometimes gives you a triangle (swept to a prism)? I have not heard of that happening, what does the swept surface look like? I wonder if some shape check (quality check) is causing a failure which would cause it to step down to quad dominant to pass?

If you want to share, development is interested in any failure cases so we can improve the tool... On the other hand, we often find that failure cases are due to user error, in which case we need to try and make the tool easier to use. (Not your case though, I am assuming your did it right because it should be easy enough to specify all quad, not much room for error unless you just didn't "apply" it or something).

I'm using ICEM v12.0. If I have 2 blocks - one after the other - and they share common face, I can't make them swept along axis passed through them both. There is another problem - often I can't merge two neighboring blocks in one block or two neighboring faces of a block in one face.

Hi Simon,

I'm asking you for help in a problem I'm having with some blocking in ICEM. I have almost all the necessary blocking for meshing a wing with a winglet at the tip. The obtained premesh has some bad quality and inverted elements since the airfoil section at the root has a blunt trailing edge and a sharp trailing edge characterizes the airfoil section at the tip.

Due to the previously explained, I collapsed the corresponding block at the trailing edge to well represent the geometry and obtained a triangular prism shaped block. Then, I tried to convert this hexa degenerated block to free but I got a message that reads "could not convert degenerate hexas to free no block number 217 found". The same message is printed in both the versions 12 and 14.

Any idea of how to solve this is grateful.
