Default Prosurf to Proam problems, help please

Hello everyone, I'm currently a student at university doing my final year project on the analysis of an engine intake system, basically its a mid engined supercar and my aim is to analise it in the current forum both in the wind tunnel and in CFD then redesign it and compare results.

Ok now I'm very new at using this software (V3.150A) and am having trouble importing the files from prosurf into proam. On importing the iges file into prosurf there are obviously a lot of errors. I've ran auto repair varying the tolerances until the errors are at the minimum amount that I can get them to. My problem is that I still have 199 free curve errors but when I generate the surface grid no errors are shown other than the curve errors.

Here's a grab of the model prior to the grid

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v8...0/prosurf1.jpg

And after the grid

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v8...0/prosurf2.jpg

Now I save the prosurf files as prostar .vrt and .cell files but when I go to import them into Proam the screen just goes white and displays the following in the output window;

Sorry to bombard you guys/girls with all this info but I thought it would give a better indication where I'm going wrong. I'm running 32 bit windows XP.

sorry dude, not sure if this will help but in my experience you are better get rid of all the warnings and errors that pro-surf reports before going to pro-am,

i would go back to your original starting iges geometry and fix any problems.

Yeah I understand what you're saying but whats the best way of getting rid of the 199 free curve errors without distorting the overall profile of the CAD model.

Thanks for the reply

Can I also ask what exactly is a free curve error, I think if I have a better understanding then it may help. I've looked in the manual but can't seem to find an explanation.

Heres an update, I've created a model using Pro E and saved as an iges file then imported it into prosurf and it isn't showing any errors at all. So I save the prostar files. Then when I go to import the .cel and .vrt file into proam its still saying

**ERROR - NO CELLS DEFINED IN MODEL and MAXIMUM CELL NUMBER IS NOW 0 MAX VERTEX IS NOW 0

So I'm assuming that I'm doing something very wrong?

Regards

When you export the prosurf model it writes it as a proam dbs (1 if I remeber correctly). Just go to the database files in the proam GUI, and open it. Tom

Are u sure u saved as .vrt and .cell ? As I see here on my pro-surf, we can only export it as .dbs or .iges only (version 3.24). Then when u import in proam the .dbs file, u have to change the DBID somehow. There is a bug in that box. The default DBID will yield nothing on screen. Change that value and u will get it.

The way I save the file is by going to file then save prostar files, this allows you to save the cel and vrt files.

I've got a feeling that when I'm saving the iges file I'm not selecting the right options?

Does anyone know what options I should select when saving the iges file in Pro E?

This has got to be the problem. I'm going to try a few different options to see if anything changes.

Thanks for everyones input so far.

i use catia solids export function for iges and it usually works well, when you use prosurf to initally surface mesh your iges geometry you output it to native star-cd format , i.e. prosurf_output.dbs, then open es-aero or pro-am in import star-cd native database it the last one on the list then select the prosurf_output.dbs and hey presto you can then use pro-am or es-aero to build a decent working mesh.... if your lucky, i find alot of bugs with es-aero in win xp and star cd 3.26 and some manual manipulation of ammbatch commands in dos shell necessary

I think the best way is to clear all the cad errors in prosurf and write proam (.dbs) file and import it in proam it work may time for me

hi william

even my suggestion is try to have a good cad model i mean IGES/IGS file ...and using prosurf repair options hope we can overcome from free curves ..and once u have a surface mesh /triangulated mesh ..save it in proam DBS format instead of prostar CEL and VRT format. still if u have any free edges/ curves etc ..u can clear these errors using proam surface cleaning options ..wish u all the best

Well I finally got the file imported into Pro-am even when it still had free curve errors. What I did was to clear my working directory completely then put just the iges file into it. I then set it again as my working directory, imported the iges file into Pro-surf and repaired as best as I could then tried to import it into Pro-am and it worked fine. I honestly couldn't believe it, thanks to all your advice it's been very much appreiciated.

Kind regards

Will
