scSTREAM Used in Development of Innovative Architectural Technology
Japanese architectural firm, Nikken Sekkei Ltd. developed the award-winning BioSkin
to meet the challenges of creating environmentally-friendly and energy-saving
architectural technologies. Crafted with the idea of "improving the environment with large-
scale architecture," and inspired by traditional Japanese air-cooling techniques, Nikken
Sekkei set out to build the world's first "blind-like" exterior system that reduces heat in the
building's vicinity on the entire east wall of the 25-story Sony City Osaki office building.
BioSkin works through a complex porous ceramic pipe filtration system that evaporates
rainwater as it is filtered to the surface. The vaporization of the water through the BioSkin
system cools down the surrounding air, thus operating as a large-scale sprinkler system.
Another benefit of the BioSkin technology is its ability to offset the Heat Island phenomenon.
Temperature distribution of BioSkin (summer, south wind, 2PM)
Nikken Sekkei utilized Cradle's scSTREAM, a General Purpose Thermo-fluid Analysis
System with Structured Mesh, to simulate the environment and discover the effects of the
BioSkin technology. For the simulation, the data was comprised of information from Tokyo
University, and temperature simulations were performed under the conditions of a summer
day with prevailing wind. Other buildings in the area and the surface temperature of nearby
roads were also taken into account. The end result of the simulation was a prediction of a 2
degree celsius drop in temperature around the entrance to the model.
