Latest version of Leading Design Suite for Turbomachinery offers significant new functionality and modules to enable a faster, more effective design process for all engineers, especially for Multi-objective/Multi-disciplinary optimization.

LONDON, UK and Chicago, Illinois USA – 04 November, 2015 – – Advanced Design Technology (ADT), a global leader in the development of advanced turbomachinery design methods and the TURBOdesign Suite today announces that its TURBOdesign Suite version 6.0 is now shipping. This version of the company’s three-dimensional (3D) inverse design technology software provides a major update to the Suite with significant new functionality and new modules to enable a faster, more effective design process for all engineers. Turbomachinery design engineers and original equipment manufacturers benefit from the 3D inverse design technology in ADT’s TURBOdesign Suite.

TURBOdesign Suite 6.0

TURBOdesign Suite is a unique aerodynamic and hydrodynamic 3D design software package that allows users to design, analyze and optimize all types of turbomachinery, such as axial, mixed-flow, or centrifugal pumps, compressors, fans, turbines and torque converters. Using the software, designers evaluate turbomachinery package size and performance predictions, perform detailed 3D blade design with 3D inverse design capabilities, analyze flow information per component, stage performances with turbomachinery specific 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and automate exploration of the design space with automatic optimization capabilities.

"This latest release of TURBOdesign Suite builds on the strong fundaments of advanced 3D inverse design approach to extend and complement requirements of our large turbomachinery manufacturers client base," says Professor Mehrdad Zangeneh, Founder and Managing Director at ADT, as well as Professor of Thermofluids at University College London, “TURBOdesign Suite 6.0 introduces some of the most advanced blade design and multi-objective/multi-disciplinary optimization capabilities in the market to assist manufacturers with developing the next generation of turbomachinery components that meet the stringent emission requlations in turbomachinery such as EU’s ECOdesign directive and related legislation on emission from cars.”

TURBOdesign Suite 6.0 new version highlights:

TURBOdesign Pre

Preliminary Map Prediction for Centrifugal Compressors.
An important aspect of turbomachinery design is the meanline design at which point key dimensions such as tip diameter and exit width are computed for a given duty condition. These geometrical parameters have a major effect on performance. TURBOdesign Pre already provides an accurate and efficient means of preliminary design for centrifugal compressors, centrifugal and mixed flow pumps, radial turbines and centrifugal fans.

In TURBOdesign Suite 6.0, a new functionality is added to TURBOdesign Pre for centrifugal compressors to rapidly provide estimates of a compressor map at a few speeds specified by the designer. This capability can help designers make rapid judgments on the design point used for a given compressor to meet specific choke and stall requirements. This will be of use in turbochargers as well as chiller and industrial applications.

New Features in TURBOdesign 1
The TURBOdesign1 user interface has been upgraded to include a variety of new features designed to enhance and improve the user experience and browsing capabilities.

A major enhancement has been the addition of the “ADT User Defined Performance Parameters Library”, which is a Python class with methods which enable the designer to access the CFD data generated by TURBOdesign1. This feature enables the designer to harness the power of Python to develop bespoke scripts to perform complex calculations, which can then be exported to the TD1PerfData.dat file. These can then be used as constraints, targets or objectives in TURBOdesign Optima or in ANSYS Workbench using our new TURBOdesign WB module.

TURBOdesign Optima
In order to meet emission regulations such as EU’s Ecodesign directive many turbomachinery manufacturers have to consider optimizing designs at multiple operating points. TURBOdesign Optima’s new features include a built in Design of Experiment Method based on Optimal Latin Hypercube and Kriging for creating surrogate models, seamlessly coupled with TURBOdesign1 and other FEA and CFD codes. It enables accurate multi-point/multi-objective/multi-disciplinary optimization of all types of turbomachinery under industrial time scales a reality.

Integration of TURBOdesign inside ANSYS Workbench
A new module of TURBOdesign Suite 6.0 is TURBOdesign WB, which is a tool that allows for easy integration of TURBOdesign1 in ANSYS Workbench. It does this by generating Workbench scripts to setup the project schematics automatically. Integrating TURBOdesign1 in Workbench allows the user to perform parametric studies, response surface optimization and direct optimization in ANSYS Workbench with seamless data exchange between TURBOdesign1, Turbogrid and CFX inside ANSYS Workbench.

TURBOdesign 3DLab
TURBOdesign 3DLab is a new module powered by ANSYS Spaceclaim for rapidly creating solid models of blade rows generated by means of TURBOdesign1 and volutes created with TURBOdesign Volute. Creating a solid model is extremely fast, with a typical workflow only taking two minutes. It also provides other features, including enabling the user to add fillets and combine solids. Finally, it allows exporting the created geometry to a wide array of file formats, making it compatible with the most commonly used CAD software packages, such as Solidworks, CATIA and Pro Engineer.

TURBOdesign Suite System Requirements, Availability and Pricing
TURBOdesign Suite 6.0 is now available for download, the Suite runs on Windows systems. It operates on mid-range workstations with 2.4 Ghz or better processors, 2 GB RAM and 1Gb disk space. The TURBOdesign Suite is sold in modules starting from $15,000 USD with software training and technical support included.

About Advanced Design Technology
Advanced Design Technology (ADT) is a global leader in the development of advanced turbomachinery design methods, which helps not only to shorten development time but also to improve the performance of turbomachinery components. ADT’s aim is to put designers in direct control of the aerodynamic design and to shorten, considerably, the design time and time to market for a range of turbomachinery products. ADT’s clients, who represent some of the leading global players in the aerospace, automotive, power generation and marine fields, have achieved significant returns on investment in terms of reduction in design times, higher performance and ease of know-how transfer among different design teams and projects.
