Highly dilute gas conditions are encountered in a wide variety of technological applications including hypersonic spacecraft design, MEMS, chemical vapour decomposition and manufacturing processes in near-vacuum environments. The dominant numerical technique for such rarefied gas flows is the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method.
We present a 2-day training course on the use of the open-source DSMC code dsmcFoam. The code has been developed at the Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde and has been written within the framework of the open source C++ CFD toolbox OpenFOAM. The main features of the dsmcFoam code include the capability to perform DSMC simulations for multi-species conditions, to model arbitrary 2D/3D geometries using unstructured polyhedral meshes and unlimited parallel processing.
The dsmcFoam training will be provided by experts in DSMC from the the University of Glasgow and the University of Strathclyde. The timetable is outlined below:
Day 1: Background to the DSMC method. Overview of dsmcFoam. Meshing complex geometries in OpenFOAM. Demonstration of a hypersonic test case. Practical session for attendees to set-up and run a hypersonic test case.
Day 2: Modelling reacting flows in dsmcFoam using the Quantum Kinetic approach. Pressure-driven, low-speed DSMC flows. Practical session for attendees to set-up and run a reacting flow and a pressure-driven, low-speed flow. Practical session for attendees to address any DSMC-related issues and discuss their own projects.
Course fees : £500 (UK Sterling, inclusive of VAT). This includes all supporting materials, lunches and an evening dinner on the 14th April.
