Thin Plate meshing

Hi all,
I have a structure as in attachment. That is a thin plate 10*10 and thickness 0.05 on which is positioned a parallelepiped with base 1*1 and height 3. Which is the fast way to mesh this structure in gambit? I'm interested only Heat transfer, that is my BC must be simple temperature on faces. Thanks all |

split your domain at the 1x1x3 basis.
Now you are able to mesh the 10x10x0.5 with cooper, and also the 1x1x3 parallepiped

you have to follow an order:
First mesh one of top faces from parallepiped, then mesh the parallepiped volume. Now mesh the surface you displayed with the translation (not the translated one ) Pick the thin volume, and select cooper (if not automatically selected). As sources select the one you meshed, and the opposite one, but don't mesh it. It should be ok. Then you just have to set the node distribtion in the depth

All right, only 2 problems: 1) to mesh thin plate, he requires 3 faces: meshed, unmeshed and a face in common with parallepiped. It's ok? 2)Gambit tell me: "Warning: The desidered meshing scheme of Map could not be maintened by the Cooper tool for face 1 (face 1 is that unmeshed opposite displayed face) when meshing volume. You may want to tryng meshing this face first " |

1) yes sorry 2 surfaces common level, and the opposite (gambit will automatically project mesh on this last surface)
2) it can be that the opposite is not mappable, but you can fix it, by changing vertex type http://aerojet.engr.ucdavis.edu/gamb...h_face_setvrtx

first try to mesh the surface with quad/map
does gambit selects automatically this schema? If not try to enforce quad/map If it fails, then check Vertex type: all 4 nodes have to be set as End

you can mesh more quickly with unstrured mesh and size function.
But in your case, you have thin plate, which means your mesh will explose (cell's size) because of the small height. It is better to handle this plate with cooper (10-20 cells in depth). But you can try on your own, you will see what I mean.

It is also ok, but you can enforce with quad map

Scheme was:

before meshing the thin volume with cooper, you need to mesh the surface which lies at the height than parallepiped basis.
That means from thin volume you have one cap full meshed (2 surfaces) Pick those 2 surfaces as source and the opposite (cooper selected). If Gambit cannot mesh the opposite surface, try to mesh it alone with quad or pave (without meshing edges first)
