Hey guys,

I have a problem importing the mesh from Ansys ICEM to CFX-Pre. When I update the Setup in CFX-Pre there comes the following message:

"Update failed from the Setup component in CFX. Apllication Error in CFX-Pre: ERROR. There was a problem importing the mesh from the requested file. The importing process reported the following problem:
Unable to import mesh: Can't generate valid element."

In Ansys ICEM, in the tree on the left side, there is also missing "shells" and "points" (see picture).

It would be great to get some help!

Joh

(I use Ansys 17.0)

There is no mesh in ICEm. So something went wrong there.
But it is impossible to see what the problem is. We need much more info.

I see blocking. Are your trying to create a hex mesh?

Hey Gert-Jan,

I have created a hexa-mesh and converted it to unstruct mesh. In the Pre-Mesh I can see it.

It looks like you are using ICEM and CFX-Pre in a Workbench environment. Then everything should go automatically. After converting the mesh to unstructured, did you update your ICEM component in Workbench?

Actually, I never use ICEM in the Workbench environment. Stronger, I try to avoid Workbench as much as possible. I always use the packages standalone. So I cannot be much of help here.

In standalone, you have to convert your hex mesh to unstructured, then export this to a .cfx5 file, which can be imported in Pre.

Hi Gert-Jan,

yes, I use the workbench and I updated the Project after creating the mesh. Normally there should be "shells" and "Points" in ICEM under "Mesh" in the objecttree on the left side. I have no idea what could be the solution or what went wrong...

Maybe some else can give some advices?

BR,
Joh

Stop using Workbench. Besides the workbench mesher, you don't need Workbench. In my opinion, it's only overhead.

What meassages are written to text console of ICEM? Does it say that conversion to unstructured mesh and/or export to CFX was succesfull?

One of the disadvantages of using Workbench is that it is not straightforward to find out if a mesh generated and exported to a file succesfully. The file structure is a bit vague in my opinion.

In stand alone, if I convert to unstructured, I obtain a .uns file. If I export this to CFX-format, I obtain a file with extension .cfx5. Can you find such files in the Workbench-tree?
