Hi everyone,

I'm setting a new rack for my univeristy department, and it will be the first time I'm doing this instead of a single CPU workstation, so I have some doubts regarding RAM:

I'm choosing a 2xEPYC 7763 configuration, and thats two cpus with octa-channel memory bandwith. I know that the motherboard has 16 RAM slots, but I don't know if its better to fill all the slots, so each CPU has its 8 channels filled, or since the mobo is dual, its enough with 8 channels filled and 8 empty, just in case we need a RAM upgrade afterwards (I'm thinking in 512 GB of RAM so this is highly unlikely giving our normal workloads, but anyhow)

Ay help is appreciated. Best regards,

On a dual-socket board with 16 DIMM slots, each slot corresponds to one memory channel.
If you don't fill all slots, you won't get all memory channels. Which results in worse performance.
Don't do it, fill all 16 slots right away. DDR4 is pretty cheap these days, starting at 2.20€/GB.
