Streamfunction-velocity derivation

If I am trying to derive the streamfunction-velocity formulas do I start with the curl of the momentum equation and change that into the streamfunction-vorticity formulas and then back track the vorticities to streamfunctions? I am trying to convert the equations for flow through porous media as given by Jiang to streamfunction-veloctiy formulation. I have turned them into streamfunction-vorticity, but I want to get rid of the vorticities to help with boundary conditions.
