Dear Foamers,

I want to add some particles to my flow past sphere simulations and track their path. So, I can have a clear picture of what happens in the wake behind the sphere. I have never done particle tracking before. I am using my own flow solver, and I want to add the particle tracking part to it. Can you please guide me? Which solver will be the most appropriate for my case?

It seems that I have to use a Lagrangian solver with a particle could. But, there are many lagrangian solvers, and I am confused about which one to use.

It's better if you can direct me with some simple tutorials.

Hi,
as you have already seen, there are different particle solvers. The selection depends on the particle concentration in the flow.
Low concentration: 1-Way-Coupling sufficient (icoUncoupledKinematicParcelFoam). The velocity profile is frozen. Only the fluid has an effect on the particles.

If you have a higher concentration you can choose between MPPICFoam or DPMFoam. Depending on the setting, these solvers take Two-Way-Coupling(particle-flow interaction) or Four-Way-Coupling(particle-particle interaction) into account.

Start with IcoUncoupledkinematicParcelFoam. Should be fine in your case.

Have you considered using paraviews streamline filter instead of adding particles for pathline tracking? To me it sounds like this would get you the results you are looking for.
