I see that I can make it work from the second suggestion.

However, it is only a workaround. I still am trying to figure out how to select the patches for it to meshed around...

I was trying to find a way to refine the patches using snappyHexMesh I had created using blockMesh? I can do it for an external stl file but have been struggling with this.
