Hi guys,

I've been trying to simulate a Von-Kárman vortex street. I've managed to obtain it.

I'm now trying to verify the Strouhal number. My idea is to check the Cylinder's Cl and verify the frequency of vortex shedding.

But I've got a question. What is the reference area? I thought it was the Cylinder's area but I've also seen a post here saying it's the diameter * "depth"...

Could anyone enlighten me?

For purposes of checking the frequency, it doesn't matter. Because the reference area doesn't affect the frequency.

The reference area in the drag coefficient is usually the projected frontal area, which is like a diameter*depth for a 3D cylinder.


The reference area in the lift coefficient is often the planform area (which is the projected area from above). For a cylinder, this also is diameter*depth.

Thank you very much for your answer. I should have written that I'm doing 2D. So, the depth is considered to be 1m?
